Dog Food

Until recently dog food was neither taken seriously nor was it a subject that was discussed in detail. Pet owners used to feed their dogs with what they thought were best for the health and activity of their pets. Today, you can find numerous dog food options that narrow down to food that are specific for the breed, age, size and activity levels of the dog. Though it is considered convenient by pet owners to simply pick up a bagful of dog food from a pet store and feed the canine, it needs a lot more closer attention. Feeding your pet dog with the wrong dog food can cause indigestion and a lot of other serious health problems for your pet in the long run.

Homemade Dog Food vs. Commercial Dog Food

According to veterinarians, it is a good idea to try homemade dog food in combination with commercial dog food. The commercial dog food is in actual a convenience food option. It should be preferably used when you are unable to feed the dog a wholesome meal. Homemade dog food can be given in such a manner as to balance the diet of the dog. Being a carnivore, a dog should be given a good amount of meat, poultry, fish and egg. While cooking meat, care should be taken to remove bones and offer the raw bones to dogs as cooked bones tend to splinter.

Apart from this, dog food can also contain good quantities of carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins. For carbohydrates, you can consider feeding your pet with grains such as wheat, rice, oats and barley. But since these grains are complex carbohydrates it should be chewed well in order to be digested properly. Since carnivores are not equipped to chew food, these grains should be given only in limited quantities along with vegetables that are sliced into very small pieces.

You always have the choice of relying on commercial dog food that can be used to feed your pet when you run out of choices with homemade dog food. In fact there are many pet owners who, due to lack of time, feed their dog only with commercial dog food and find it a perfectly fine option.
